Who Can Benefit From YOGA?

Those with low energy, back pain, fibromyalgia, arthritis, asthma, and high blood pressure, as well as students with higher levels of fitness, can all benefit from Yoga. Our classes will help you challenge yourself to firm muscles, increase flexibility and sharpen concentration. Even for beginners, a Yogic outlook reduces anxiety and depression and can serve as a powerful tool to arrest indulgence in smoking, eating and drinking. Yoga students feel increased energy and experience greater calmness of mind.

What Style of Yoga is Offered?

Our asana (posture) classes, in the tradition of Classic Hatha Yoga, feature slow stretch, coordinating breath and movement with directed focus. Classes also include the practice of deep relaxation, as well as breathing techniques for increased energy and calm.

Our teachers emphasize self-awareness, acceptance, and growth to help you learn to tune in to your body's signals and avoid strain as you progress. Because we limit class size, the instructors can work effectively with students at different levels.

Are Yoga Therapy Programs Available?

Yes, we offer private and group Yoga instruction designed especially for people with specific health concerns, and for those living with chronic illness or recovering from injury or surgery. These programs make Yoga practice accessible to those who need to sit in a chair or who need an especially gentle approach, or need to move more slowly than would be practical in a General class. Please contact the Center for more information.

The Center is listed with the American Cancer Society's Local Resources Database and has provided programs for the Kentucky Chapter of the National M.S. Society and for numerous Support Groups. The Center also provided Yoga instruction for participants in Fibromyalgia Research conducted by the University of Kentucky. Our Yoga Therapy Programs are supervised by Shelley Smith, Founder and Director of the Yoga Meditation & Therapy Center.
